Jeff Modisett, Special Counsel

Mr. Modisett has a diverse background in law, politics and high technology. Early in his career, he served as an Assistant US Attorney in the Criminal Division of the Central District of California, where he rose to the level of Deputy Chief of the Public Corruption & Government Fraud Unit. In 1996, he successfully ran for the office of Indiana Attorney General, a position he held from 1997 to 2000. In that capacity, he was a member of the 1997 states’ negotiating team that reached a preliminary settlement with the tobacco industry, which called for historic changes in the way cigarettes are marketed in the US. He was also Chairman of the 1998 Allocation Committee responsible for devising a formula for distributing the US$205 billion settlement to each of the states and territories. From 2011 to 2015, Mr. Modisett was CLO of a financial technology start-up in San Francisco and played an integral part in building the company to nearly 200 employees. He then became the project lead for select technology initiatives at, and for, Dentons US LLP – including as the CEO of what has become the Nextlaw Global Referral Network, a sophisticated platform that combines the power of the world’s largest law firm with thousands of small to mid-sized independent law firms.

In his private law practice, he has acted as a senior legal advisor to a diverse group of Fortune 500 and high-technology companies (including Facebook, LegalZoom, Lyft, Microsoft, (PRODUCT)RED and Publishers Clearing House (PCH)) on a number of issues, including antitrust, consumer protection, privacy and political relationships. He also advises clients on high-level litigation strategy and on corporate compliance and best practices.
