Sullivan & Triggs Welcomes Courtney Elgart as Senior Associate
April 2021
Firm NewsLOS ANGELES, Calif. / WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ms. Elgart joins Sullivan & Triggs from the Political Law Group at Perkins Coie LLP, where she litigated some of the most closely watched and time-compressed disputes of the past two years. She joins the firm as a Senior Associate.
Ms. Elgart's practice has centered on high-stakes litigation conducted under public scrutiny and on compressed timelines. She successfully represented the presidential electors pledged to President Biden in the Nevada election contest at trial and on appeal. She deposed sitting members of Congress and secured an admission that a court relied on in granting summary judgment. She represented individual and organizational clients in state and federal campaign finance investigations, both administrative and criminal, including a five-week criminal trial. Across more than two dozen matters arising from the 2020 general election, she litigated First Amendment and other constitutional and statutory claims in state and federal courts on emergency schedules. She also had an extensive appellate practice, representing appellants, appellees, and amici in the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Circuits, in the U.S. Supreme Court, and in the intermediate appellate and state supreme courts in California, Michigan, Nevada, New York, and Pennsylvania.
Ms. Elgart clerked for the Honorable Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for the Honorable Richard Andrews of the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, one of the country's busiest venues for high-value commercial and intellectual property litigation. She graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was elected to the Order of the Coif, ranked in the top five percent of her class all three years, served on the Barristers' Council moot court team, and received the Exceptional Pro Bono Service Award.
Prior to law school, Ms. Elgart served as Chief of Staff to the House Chair of the Massachusetts Legislature's Joint Committee on Higher Education.
Ms. Elgart is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia, and before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Third and Sixth Circuits and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan.
Ms. Elgart joins Sheldon Eisenberg to form the firm's litigation group, which represents companies and individuals in high-value commercial disputes, with particular emphasis on the entertainment industry. Among other matters, she will represent the creator and executive producers of The Walking Dead in their litigation against AMC.
